Historical Background of the Telephone Directory

The first Telephone Directory is published in 1878 at the First World's Fair in New Heaven, USA. It consisted of a list of 50 telephone numbers on a single sheet of paper. The list was organized into different categories to locate a product or service such as: Residences, Meat Market, Stables.

The list was managed by an operator who received all calls from the area. Two years later, the number of customers had grown to such an extent that merchants were forced to publish private directories: organized in alphabetical order and making it easy to locate products and services.

The boom was such that the telephone companies became aware of the relationship between the telephone service and the classified directory. Phone companies make deals with private directory publishers.

In 1883 the Yellow Pages are published in the Cheyenne printer, Wyoming, USA.

Why are they called Yellow Pages?

In the Cheyenne printer in Wyoming it happened that, when white paper ran out and due to the urgency in the delivery of the product, they had no other alternative but to resort to yellow paper.

After World War II was when the Yellow Pages were widely used, due to the variety of products and services that began to be developed, turning this Directory into a true buyer's guide.

Initially, the Bell Telephone Company had intended to register the 'Yellow Pages' trademark, but realized that it could do better business by allowing other companies to use the name, thereby making it more popular.

The factors that determined the reach, size and use of the Yellow Pages are the following:

Population growth: generated an increase in the number of residences, businesses and telephones, as well as a greater use of the Directories.

Increase in products and services: the number of companies that offered a variety of products and services required by industrialists and consumers increased the number of listings in the Yellow Pages and, therefore, the size of the directories.

Increased Population Mobility: Led consumers to seek out and rely on directory advertising as a guide to locating dealers in distant towns or new neighborhoods.

Increase in the use of the telephone to buy: the growth of the population and the need to buy through the telephone, to save time, led the population to consult the Yellow Pages more and more, and over the years, men of businesses have realized its effectiveness as an advertising medium.

Caribbean Media Historical Review

In the month of December of the year 1964, Messrs. Heron A. Weeker and Ramón Mejía, formalized the necessary steps for the installation in our country of the International Telephone Directory Services Company (SATI), in agreement with the Dominican Telephone Company C by A., signed a contract for a period of five (5) years for the annual printing of the telephone directory.

SATI offices were opened in Santo Domingo in February 1965, when Mr. Ramón Mejía trained the first sellers for the telephone directory in our country. In mid-March of that same year, the first sales activities began with the objective of reaching RD$ 100,000.00 per month by then.

In the month of April the revolution broke out and the offices were closed. It was at this time that Mr. Diógenes Peña transported all the existing material to Jamaica, in order to collate, print and bind the first directory of Yellow Pages and White Pages.

In the month of October when the situation was normalized, the activities resumed again. The General Telephone Directory Company, a subsidiary of GTE, bought the contract it had with Codetel from SATI and took over the activities in 1971..

In 1982 the Yellow Pages offices were moved to the La Nave building on John F. Kennedy Avenue.

In 1984, Codetel assumed the production of all the directories that GTE edited, as well as all the employees, turning Yellow Pages into a Codetel department.

In 1997, the company became independent from CODETEL and GTE again assumed the operations of directories, continuing with its culture of training and professional growth for its employees, to this day. As of this date, the company is contracted by the Dominican Telephone Company (CODETEL) to edit its telephone directories.

In this same year, GTE introduces the innovation of door-to-door distribution of directories to businesses and through Codetel offices to residences. GTE was recognized on numerous occasions and awarded by various organizations for its achievements and results.

In 1997, at that time, the TEO Committee for Operational Evaluation Workshop, evolved into the PEC group, Strategic Quality Planning for its acronym, leading the company to achieve ISO 9001 Certification by mid-2000, which guarantees the existence of a quality system that guarantees customer satisfaction. With ISO 9001 Certification, the company is committed to offering customers a world-class service, innovating and expanding its range of products.

In 2001, GTE Directories became part of Verizon's global corporate strategy, changing its name to Verizon Servicios de Información Dominicana, S.A.

In March 2006, the Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe Investment Fund (WCAS) acquired our operations and it is from this date that its name becomes Caribe Servicios de Información Dominicana, S.A.

In 2016, it was renamed Caribe Media.
